As White-Collar Suicide Rates Reach All-Time High, Need for Employee Assistance Programs Emphasized

During today's economic turmoil, there is an increased need for employee stress management and financial counseling and planning, according to Deer Oaks EAP Services, a nationwide provider of Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Work/Life Services.

"Suicide rates are increasing among middle aged, white males and females, and the importance of employer groups providing counseling for their employees is at an all time high," explained Dr. Melinda Down, Chief Clinical Officer at Deer Oaks. "Employees and their family members are worried about their financial resources and job security, and the stress associated with the turmoil in the stock market is impacting many."

Employee Assistance Programs offer free, confidential assessments, short-term counseling, prevention and education and referrals to employees and their family members. "It is critical that employees and their family members have a place to turn to when facing such high levels of stress," said Dr. Paul Alan Boskind, the CEO of Deer Oaks.

EAPs offer a lot of resources that can help people cope with their stress in an adaptive manner and minimize the risk of more serious conditions like depression or anxiety. As one provider of EAPs, Deer Oaks strives to help employer groups develop their workforce through employee wellness and supervisor training. "As we assist managers and supervisors in developing more effective leadership skills, the morale and communication patterns within the workplace improve significantly, resulting in a healthier and more productive workforce," explained Dr. Down. "Many of the employees also appreciate the legal and financial, childcare and eldercare, and health and wellness services available through the EAP."
